Trump Steps in and Defends Gaetz Over Allegations
On Wednesday, former President Donald Trump released a statement, defending GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida, Trump’s political ally who is currently facing a federal investigation after allegations of sexual misconduct have surfaced.
Trump’s statement was released shortly after The New York Times reported that the representative once asked Trump’s White House aides to grant him a preemptive pardon before his term came to an end.
However, in Wednesday’s statement, the former president said Gaetz has never asked him this directly. Trump also noted that people should remember that he denied accusations against him.
Gaetz, an avid supporter of Trump, sought out preemptive pardons for himself. He also sought after pardons for other unnamed congressional allies for any crime they might have committed. At the time, however, officials from the White House thought the request would set a bad precedent.
According to a source, many rolled their eyes on Gaetz’s actions and that the White House didn’t even consider it.
Currently, Gaetz is being investigated for possible sex trafficking and for payments to women, as per the New York Times.
However, until now, no charges have been filed against him.
It remains unclear whether the Florida representative knew that the Justice Department was building a case against a tax collector in Georgia who has a connection with him.
Until today, Gaetz has maintained his innocence, vehemently denying the said accusation.
