In an interview with MSNBC host Chris Matthews set to air Wednesday evening, Trump said “there has to be some form of punishment” for women who have abortions — a position unpopular with even the most ardently pro-life.
Trump’s comments were made in response to a question from Matthews: “Should abortion be punished? This is not something you can dodge.”
“Look, people in certain parts of the Republican Party, conservative Republicans, would say, ‘Yes, it should,’” the businessman and 2016 front-runner replied.
“How about you?” Matthews asked.
“I would say it’s a very serious problem and it’s a problem we have to decide on,” Trump said. “Are you going to send them to jail?”
“I’m asking you,” Matthews said.
“I am pro-life,” Trump said.
“How do you actually ban abortion?” Matthews pressed.
“Well, you go back to a position like they had where they would perhaps go to illegal places but we have to ban it,” Trump said. “There has to be some form of punishment.”
“For the woman?” Matthews interjected.
“Yeah,” Trump replied as he nods.
The brash billionaire wasn’t specific about what the punishment should be, only saying it would “have to be determined.”
“They’ve set the law and frankly the judges, you’re going to have a very big election coming up for that reason because you have judges where it’s a real tipping point and with the loss of Scalia, who was a very strong conservative, this presidential election is going to be very important,” Trump said. “When you say what’s the law, nobody knows what the law is going to be. It depends on who gets elected.”
In a statement provided to TheBlaze, Trump said that ”this issue is unclear and should be put back into the states for determination.”
“Like Ronald Reagan, I am pro- life with exceptions, which I have outlined numerous times,” he added.
Soon after, Trump released an additional statement, reversing his earlier remark.
“If Congress were to pass legislation making abortion illegal and the federal courts upheld this legislation or any state were permitted to ban abortion under state and federal law, the doctor or any other person performing this illegal act upon a woman would be held legally responsible, not the woman,” the campaign statement said. “The woman is a victim in this case as is the life in her womb. My position has not changed – like Ronald Reagan, I am pro-life with exceptions.”
Trump’s assertion that he is pro-life during the 2016 election season is a reversal of previous positions. During a 1999 interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Trump said he is “pro-choice in every respect.”

CM’s always has a huge left-leaning agenda, so his approach is always suspect. I would have told this idiot to shut his obama hole and let me speak.
The question was about an unreal circumstance, where abortion as illegal. Trump said the woman should be punished and then back-up and suggested that the person doing the procedure should be punished. If we assume that abortion is illegal, then why should the woman not be also guilty of this illegal act. It is illegal to kill a person, so if the woman kills or hires someone to kill, is she not guilty of murder for that illegal act?
If this is about that crazy media woman, then here again an ignorant public is wrong. The Secret Service and the woman are at fault here.
The Secret Service must maintain a safety zone around the person they are protecting. No one or woman should be able to penetrate that safety zone and this crazy woman was advised to stop and did not listen. The Secret Service should had seized her and detained her. She was 100% wrong for entering the zone and the Secret Service did not do their job. Trump’s manager had to do the Secret Service job. This was not a lunch line at a private school somewhere. This candidate was already attacked before. The Secret Service guys should be fired for allowing the public, this crazy woman, for getting that close to the candidate.

The media woman and Secret Service at fault for allowing anyone to access the secure zone that should exist between the public and the candidate. They did not do their job. This lady should have be detained and prevented from close contact with the candidate. Trump’s mgr. is the hero here as he did the job the Secret Service should have done. Detain the woman and fire the Secret service guys. This is not a lunch line at some private school. Get some real Secret Service to protect Trump and get rid of that annoying media woman.

If, as Chris Mathews proposed, that abortion became illegal would not the woman bear responsibility for seeking out an illegal service? Do they not arrest Johns and hookers? If a drug dealer, who sells illegal drugs, is arrested for such and then the person who buys those same drugs is arrested for acquiring them illegally is also arrested, since that’s the LAW; how then, should abortionist and their clients, be treated any less severely under the “law?!”

Can Cruz, Kasich, Clinton and Sanders say the same? Cruz had an opportunity to put speculation to rest and say that he has always been faithful to his wife – case closed, but he couldn’t do it. That makes any statement Cruz makes going forward come under scrutiny since he can’t answer that one question honestly. He may not like it that Trump’s camp attacked his wife, but why did he allow his surrogate Carly Fiorina to attack Melania? Seems like Ms. Fiorina has more of a track of war on women than Trump does. American people are fed up with ALL politicians.
