White House: Biden Wants More Gun Control Instead of Strengthening School Security
President Joe Biden does not support any proposal that would increase school security; instead, he wants to focus on gun control, the White House revealed on Tuesday.
The White House responded to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell’s (R-KY) proposal for a legislative response to the mass shooting incident that took place in an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas.
“In discussing how we might come together to target the problem of mental illness and school safety, we’ll get back at it next week and hope to have results,” McConnell stated on Tuesday.
However, the White House had a negative response to these proposals.
But the White House reacted negatively to McConnell’s proposals.
On Tuesday, House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said, “Those are two things that he does not agree on,” when she was asked about the senator’s proposal during the daily press briefing.
According to the press secretary, the president did not have any interest in strengthening the security of schools to help stop possible shooters.
“That is not his focus obviously and when it comes to school … I know there has been a conversation about hardening schools, that is not something he believes in,” Jean-Pierre stated.
She also dismissed mental health issues-related legislation proposals and instead focused on the gun violence “pandemic” in the country.
“What’s the problem here. The problem is with guns and not having legislation to really deal with an issue that is a pandemic here in this country,” she also said.
On Monday, Biden said that he thinks McConnell and a few “rational Republicans” have the ability to come up with some kind of gun control bills.
“Look, I don’t know, but I think there’s a realization on the part of rational Republicans … I think there’s a recognition in their part that they — we can’t continue like this. We can’t do this,” he said.
