John MacKay, a 100-year-old Army Air Corps veteran who survived WWII, has now survived COVID-19. He is currently housed at Holyoke Soldiers' Home in Massachusetts.

“It’s a miracle. It is,” said his daughter, Susan Regensburger. “He is a fighter.”

According to Regensburger, their family has been told to make funeral arrangements, but her father has now recovered and “seems to be in good spirits,” reported Fox News.

MacKay was honored for his 100th birthday this month by his friends, family, and National Guard members. They stood outside his second-floor window and gave him a ceremonial salute.

“Many of his well-wishers wore special T-shirts to commemorate the event, featuring his photo on the front and ‘Happy 100th birthday to our hero’ on the back,” reported Mass Live.

A YouTube video shows MacKay proudly wearing his Westfield American Legion Post 124 cap.

In an April article by Mass Live, family members said MacKay was in the “fight of his life” with the disease. Now, they say he is recovering well and putting on some of the weight he lost.

When MacKay was asked how he felt turning 100, he said, “Wonderful, I didn’t feel 100 until this moment. Now I know I feel 100.” He added that his secret to his long life is “to live a good life and be happy.”
