33-year-old Itayvia Lloyd dragged her 11-year-old son out of bed and threw him off the balcony of their fourth-floor apartment. After which, she punched and spit on responding officers. According to St. Paul police spokesman Steve Linders, Lloyd admitted to the attack on her child, but has not yet explained the incident.

A report by Twin Cities said that “a person in an apartment building in the St. Anthony Park neighborhood called 911 about 8:40 a.m.,” thinking it was a suicide attempt. The boy got significant injuries and couldn’t tell officers and paramedics what happened.

Linders said that the child suffered at least one broken femur, a fractured jaw, head injuries – and may be “injured emotionally as well.”

The boy’s 6-year-old sibling was unharmed in the apartment. He was taken to the Midwest Children’s Resource Center to be interviewed about the incident. Investigators also interviewed Lloyd’s girlfriend.

Lloyd tried to punch an officer during her arrest as the officer was putting her in handcuffs. “After she was placed in a holding cell at a county jail, the document stated she approached an officer and spat on his face,” reported Fox News.

Lloyd was charged with two counts of assault on a police officer but was not charged in the attack on her child. Her bail was set at $10,000 and she was due in court Wednesday.

Police Chief Todd Axtell said on Facebook that “stories like this remind me of just how fragile and precious life is. My heart goes out to this child, his brother and all who love him.”

“As someone who calls Saint Paul home, I feel the concern that is coursing though [sic] our community. I also know that we can and will rally around this child, his family and each other—by being kind to one another, reaching out if we see people in need and asking for help when we need it for ourselves,” he added.
