Film Permit Applications Increase Amid COVID-19 Pandemic as Productions Resume
Los Angeles-based non-profit organization FIlmLA saw an increase of around 40% in August permit applications. This happened as productions resume during the COVID-19 pandemic.
FilmLA “streamlines and enhances the on-location filmmaking process for communities and content creators, according to its website. They also aim “to ensure the Greater Los Angeles economy continues to thrive,” according to its website.
According to a news release that FilmLA published on September 3rd, the company received approximately 1,127 film permit applications. All these came from 829 unique projects since June.
“Monthly application intake increased nearly 40 percent in August as compared to July,” their news release reads. Also, “daily intake now averages around 27 applications per business day. After rising quickly in mid-August, overall activity levels have stabilized at around 44 percent of what FilmLA would expect under normal summer conditions,” the news release reads.
The news release added that the advertising industry has a 52 percent share of local permit requests. This industry includes still photography and commercials. Meanwhile, scripted, unscripted, and web-based television content together are at 18 percent for August permit activity.
“As an essential contributor to the Greater Los Angeles economy, film production responsibly returning to our communities is a welcome sight. Of course, as Governor Newsom and public health experts remind us, COVID-19 will be with us for a long time,” said Paul Audley, president of FilmLA.
“We are therefore mindful of the public health orders governing current filming practices,” Adley says. He added that they are “grateful for filmmakers’ conscientious embrace of crew and community safety on all permitted productions,” he added.
