Guatemala isn't Buying What Kamala is Selling-ss-Featured

Harris Staff Blames Economy and Climate on Migration.

On Sunday, the staff of Vice President Kamala Harris said that the primary drivers of the migrant surge at the country’s southern border include the climate and the economy. They announced this as Harris went to Guatemala and the president of the said country blamed the U.S. and its change of administration.

Symone Sanders, the vice president’s spokesperson, told reporters regarding Harris' position. She said the economy and climate form some of the “main drivers” of the crisis. Sanders then added that this caused the influx of immigration from the southern border. In April alone, over 178,000 found themselves at the southern border, which is a number that shows a continued spike from February and March.

Officials also noted that corruption plays a part in forcing migrants to go north, according to special envoy Richard Zuniga.

Biden Administration Still Emphasized the Role of “Root Causes”

Many critics blamed the rescinding of Trump-era policies by the Biden administration for making the crisis worse as it shows the border open. The current administration then denied this. Instead, it emphasized what it thinks the “root causes” are, including climate, crime, poverty, and corruption in the Central American region.

Biden put the vice president in charge of the diplomatic outreach in the hopes of solving the crisis in March. She also emphasized the said “root causes” the administration believes in.

Currently, Harris is in Guatemala as part of a two-day trip to the area. On Monday, she will meet with President Alejandro Giammattei. Following this, she is bound to go to Mexico.

On Sunday, in an interview with Giammatei, the Guatemalan president said he and Harries are not on the same side. He also blamed the U.S.’s more welcoming message as the cause of the surge.
