Laredo Sector Border Patrol agents in Texas saw arrests of criminal illegal immigrants go up exponentially this fiscal year. This comes as agents still deal with a grave migration crisis. The said crisis includes criminals, such as gang members and even sext offenders, among those trying to get into the U.S.
A Customs and Border Protection release stated that from the start of the fiscal year back in October, almost 760 criminals, who are also illegal migrants, have been arrested in the Laredo Sector. This shows a 1,166% increase as agents here has only made 60 arrests in the same time last year.
Number of Criminal Illegal Immigrants Arrests by Border Patrol Skyrocket
This has come as a part of an aggressive surge in encounters with migrants at the border. In April alone, agents encountered 178,000 migrants. Also, agents have estimated that up to 1,000 “gotaways” have gone past agents daily.
As per CBP, there is an influx of criminal arrests in Laredo. This includes a 20-year-old man from Mexico who became a member of the Sureno Gang and who had a notable criminal history. Additionally, agents across the border have already come across many gang members from different gangs.
In May, Chief Matthew Hudak of the Laredo Sector posted on Twitter, saying they had managed to apprehend five gang members in just seven days.
Agents have also seen an influx of convicted sex offenders trying to cross the borders – many of them were convicted of assaulting children.
Last week, CBP revealed that Del Rio Sector agents had managed to arrest 95 migrants who have sex offender convictions – a 3,166% increase compared to the same timeframe in the previous fiscal year.
This notable figure comes as border agents apprehend 10 convicted sex offenders in just one week. The said arrests happened between May 17 and 24.
