Border Crisis: Over 200,000 Migrants Encountered at the Southern Border for August
On Wednesday, it has been confirmed by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) that for the second month in a row, the number of migrant encounters at the southern border went over 200,000.
According to a Fox News report, 208,887 encounters were recorded in August. This number shows the first time migrant encounters declined under President Joe Biden’s administration. However, the drop was only a minuscule 2% over July’s 212,000 figure
Additionally, compared to August 2020, the number in August 2021 saw a 317% increase. Last year, CBP only recorded 50,014 encounters.
Apart from the number of encounters, August 2021 also saw 49% of single-adult apprehensions, while 44% of all migrants who tried to come in for the month were expelled under the Title 42 public health protections that the Trump administration put in place.
Under the said order, the current administration has expelled migrant families and single adults, implemented because of the ongoing pandemic. However, the current administration has not expelled unaccompanied minors or migrant families with young kids.
In August, the CBP recorded 18,847 encounters of unaccompanied minors – a figure slightly lower than July’s. Also, the agency said it encountered 86.7 family units, which is a 4% increase compared to the previous month.
