Authorities Find the Body of Maeve Kennedy Townsend McKean Days After Canoeing Accident
The body of Maeve Kennedy Townsend McKean has been discovered in about 25 feet of water and recovered.
According to authorities, her body was found about 2.5 miles south of her mother, former Maryland Lt. Gov. Kathleen Kennedy Townsend’s house in Shady Side, Md., about a week after vanishing. A Maryland Natural Resources Police news release said the canoe was launched from the home.
The search involved aviation and underwater imaging sonar technology. A family member reported that the U.S. Coast Guard reported the search for survivors went from a rescue mission to a recovery mission.

Both she and her 8-year-old son Gideon went missing. The news release reported that they went missing after a canoeing accident last week. According to Fox News, the incident involved a canoe capsizing at the Chesapeake Bay due to strong winds. Additionally, authorities said they will continue to search for the child.
In a Facebook post on Friday, Maeve McKean's husband, David, mentioned that their family was under a self-imposed quarantine in his mother-in-law's empty house. He also said that they stayed there in the hopes of providing their kids with more space.
Kathleen Kennedy Townsend also said in a statement: “With profound sadness, I share the news that the search for my beloved daughter Maeve and grandson Gideon has turned from rescue to recovery.”
“Our hearts are crushed, yet we shall try to summon the grace of God and what strength we have to honor the hope, energy and passion that Maeve and Gideon set forth into the world. My family thanks all for the outpouring of love and prayers as we grieve and try to bear this devastating loss,” it concluded.
McKean and her son were last seen struggling to return to shore during a canoe trip. “They just got farther out than they could handle and couldn’t get back in,” her husband said.
