6 Bible Verses Showcasing American Values

Published

on

As Americans, we are able to be free and practice our religions, the most popular in the United States being Christianity. The Bible has many verses in it on how to be a Christ-follower, but it may surprise you to know that our American values tend to reflect what is in the Bible. Here are 6 Bible verses that charge us as Americans to live our ideals to the fullest.

Peter 2:16

“Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God.”

We live in a nation where we are free to do a lot of things, but we are also called to act upon our freedom to do the right thing. We are a free country, but we must also act like we are free to do what is right in God’s sight. We are privileged to live as free people, but we are also privileged to act as God’s servant on this earth. As Americans, we want to do the right thing and this verse perfectly encompasses that desire.

Psalm 109:3-4

“They encircle me with words of hate, and attack me without cause. In return for my love they accuse me, but I give myself to prayer.”

This passage specifically references people in biblical times not believing in the church and hurling insults (and possibly obejcts) at Christ-followers. They would be attacked verbally and physically, but they did not falter and they did not retaliate. It is easy for anyone to shout insults back or follow the eye for an eye mentality, but Christ followers should act above the hatred. Americans remember that our Lord forgave us first, and in so doing we are called to forgive others.

Deuteronomy 10:17-18

“For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God, who is not partial and takes no bribe. He executes justice for the fatherless and the widow, and loves the sojourner, giving him food and clothing…”

This verse makes a point of stating that our God, the most powerful being in the universe, is fair and just. We pride ourselves in having a strong country, but we should act like our heavenly father and remember to advocate for justice no matter what. We are called to give what we have to those less fortunate and to those who can’t advocate for fairness themselves. With as strong as nation as we are, we should advocate for justice no matter the cost.

Philippians 4:13

“I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me”

This verse, though self-explanatory, is very true. This nation was built from hard work and determination, which is no small feat. We are seen as a strong nation throughout the world and were only able to achieve this through the strength of God alone. We may say that we did this ourselves, but we need to humbly accept that we only have come this far because our Lord has allowed it.

Jeremiah 29:11

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Another relatively common Bible verse like the one listed before it, the Lord has a plan for all of us. As a nation, we had a rough start and have had bumps along the way, but we are a great nation nonetheless. The Lord has plans for us and plans that will be best for us as our history continues to be written. There is rarely a time when all seems to be well, but all of this will be for our future and a hope that we can serve our God to the fullest.

2 Chronicles 7:14

“If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”

It seems that our nation is a constant state of change, turmoil, and injustice nowadays, and maybe this is because we have lost focus of who our true leader is. God tells us in this passage that if we seek him and truly repent of our sins that the Lord will bless us. It is hard to look at ourselves and look our sins in the face, but it needs to be done if we are to begin to heal and recover from all this chaos.

The Bible and America

Understandably, not all Americans are Christ-followers. However, most of the Bible verses here speak to the values that we Americans all share: the need to do the right thing, a desire for justice and fairness, and an understanding that we cannot always fight fire with fire. We are called to be more than just people, we are called to be true Americans and Christians.
