Biden Announces ‘Zero Tolerance’ For Gun Dealers To Stop Violent Crimes Which Won’t Work
On Wednesday, the Biden administration announced “zero tolerance” for gun dealers who violate the law on purpose. This comes as part of the current administration’s strategy to fight what the Justice Department dubs as a “staggering” spike in violent crime.
This will be highlighted by President Joe Biden and Attorney General Merrick Garland’s remarks on Wednesday afternoon.
The said “zero tolerance” policy will target federally licensed gun dealers who continue to practice transferring a weapon to someone banned from owning one. It will also target those who ignore tracing requests from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. The said agency will also seek to revoke the gun dealer’s license after just the first offense, per a senior White House official.
On Tuesday, the Department of Justice announced that it will launch “strike forces” targetting gun traffickers. It will also provide more transparency regarding the enforcement of policies concerned with federally licensed firearms dealers.
Apart from this, the administration is also cracking down “ghost guns” and modified firearms. These are homemade firearms that do not have serial numbers that can be used to trace each gun. This makes it difficult for authorities to track down the people who have manufactured, sold or owned the said firearm.
NRA Reacts to The Biden Administration's Zero Tolerance Against Gun Dealers
In connection to this, the National Rifle Association has criticized the administration’s efforts, saying that Biden is playing “politics.”
Amy Hunter, the NRA’s spokeswoman, said what's happening is “a political red herring,” as reported by Fox News. It intends to hide the real and grave failures of the current administration. Hunter also stated that defunding law enforcement and failing to prosecute “career criminals” has led to a spike in the crime rate.
Additionally, the NRA spokeswoman said the implementation of laws already in place, partnered with support for those who implement them, would likely result in a decrease in the crime rate.
However, Hunter added that it seems Biden “would rather play politics” instead of keeping Americans safe.
