  • A 17-year veteran police officer in Chicago was brutally beaten by a man.
  • The officer claimed she was afraid to use her gun in defense because of the nationwide backlash.
  • The man beat two other officers before they were able to bring him down with a Tazer and pepper spray.
  • The three injured officers have now been hospitalized.

Yesterday a 17-year Chicago Police veteran was badly beaten while attending the scene of an accident. Eddie Johnson, the Chicago PD's superintendent, said that the officer told him that she did not use her gun to defend herself out of fear of backlash. Johnson said, “She didn’t want her family or the department to go through the scrutiny the next day on national news.”

So the question is, is the public media coverage on police shootings now making police officers second guess themselves?

The injured officer, reportedly, got into an altercation with a man who was allegedly high on PCP. The officer had stopped at a scene of a crash early Wednesday morning in the Austin community. That is where the attacker repeatedly smashed the officers face into the pavement until she was unconscious.

At a ceremony, set to honor heroic officers and firefighters, Johnson said, “As I was at the hospital last night, visiting with her, she looked at me and said she thought she was gonna die, and she knew that she should shoot this guy, but she chose not to because she didn’t want her family or the department to go through the scrutiny the next day on national news. This officer could (have) lost her life last night,” the superintendent said. “She’s hospitalized right now, but she still has the spirit and the bravery that these officers and firefighters display every day — every day.  We have to change the narrative of the law enforcement across this country.”

Recently, the US Justice Department launched a probe into the department after a video leaked of a police officer shooting a teenager, that was walking away from them, with a knife.

The head of the largest union of the Chicago Police Department, Dean Angelo, said that Johnson's statements are just reiterating what he has been saying for months. Police “don't want to become the next YouTube video.” He continued to say, “If you participate in a deadly force situation you can save your life, but in 2016, you can lose your job.”

Jon Loevy, a civil rights lawyer said, “Any fair-minded person acknowledges that police have a very difficult and dangerous job, and this sounds like a very unfortunate situation. The hope is that the department and the community can work to repair some of the lost trust so that officers won't always feel so second-guessed.”

The 43-year-old injured officer was one of three that were hospitalized by the suspect. According to police reports the 28-year-0ld suspect was in one of the cars that was involved in the crash. Apparently, officers had seen a car crash into a building and then seen a man leaving the scene and walking down the road. When they confronted him to talk about the accident he began struggling with and fighting them. Eventually one of the officers hit the suspect with a Tazer and pepper spray, and then the man was arrested.

Johnson later said during the ceremony for honoring officers, “Just yesterday, we had an incident where officers responded to a simple traffic accident. Traffic accident — now I want you to think about this for a moment. Responded to a traffic accident to render aid wherever they could. A subject who was under the influence of PCP attacked a female officer, viciously pounded her head into the street as her partner tried to get him off of her. And this attack went on for several minutes.”

At the moment charges are being discussed for the suspect. Either way, it's clear that the public media coverage of police shootings is negatively affecting our police officers judgment.
