Bogus 2nd Amendment Documentary Might Cost Katie Couric Millions
- The Virginia Citizens Defense League is suing Katie Couric for $12 million in damages for a documentary she produced and appeared in.
- The group claims the documentary edited an interview to make the VCDL look foolish and uninformed.
- This story was originally reported in May after the documentary aired and the real audio was released exposing the truth.
- Katie Couric said it wasn't her decision to make the edit, but she did take the blame.
Katie Couric is in hot water again for the misleading documentary she made earlier this year about gun rights.
The Virginia Citizens Defense League, a non-profit group dedicated to protecting gun owners’ rights to bear arms, is suing Couric for $12 million in damages.
In may, it came to light that Katie Couric and the team behind the documentary edited the group in a negative way to distort their image and the facts.
“We were horrified to see how Couric and her team manipulated us and the video footage to make us look like fools who didn’t stand up for the Second Amendment,” Philip Van Cleave, President of the VCDL, said. “We want to set the record straight and hold them accountable for what they’ve done. You shouldn’t intentionally misrepresent someone’s views just because you disagree with them.”

The edit in question is when Katie Couric asked the group, “If there are no background checks for gun purchasers, how do you prevent felons or terrorist from walking into, say, a licensed gun dealer and purchasing a gun?” The original shows the member of the Virginia Citizens Defense League sitting in silence for eight seconds or so not knowing the answer.
In reality, as the uncovered audio record proved, the group answered immediately and the interview went on from there.
According to the complaint filed by The Virginia Citizens Defense League, the filmmakers “knowingly and maliciously manufactured the fictional exchange by splicing in footage that the filmmakers took surreptitiously after telling the interviewees to be silent for ten seconds so that recording equipment could be calibrated.”
“The filing also contains side-by-side screenshots of the film’s footage of the VCDL members and anti-gun advocates, alleging that the filmmakers manipulated lighting to cast shadows on the VCDL members and to make them appear sinister and untrustworthy.”
Katie Couric has claimed that she did not edit the film or have any input on the way it was cut, but she did take credit for the blame back in May releasing the following statement, “I take responsibility for a decision that misrepresented an exchange I had with members of the Virginia Citizens Defense League.”
