CDC Order Protects Renters from Eviction During the COVID-19 Pandemic

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has implemented a temporary eviction moratorium. This protects U.S. renters from eviction during the COVID-19 pandemic, as announced by the Trump administration.

The moratorium “will apply to all rental units nationwide until Dec. 31 and goes into effect immediately, senior administration officials said of an unpublished CDC agency order,” MarketWatch reported. The moratorium would reportedly cover around 40 million renters.

According to senior administration officials, the CDC order will apply to a renter earning $98,000 or less and couples earning $198,000 or less – “who are likely to fall into homelessness if they are unable to stay in their properties,” Fox Business reported.

Renters must also prove that they made their best efforts to receive government assistance.

“President Trump is committed to helping hardworking Americans stay in their homes and combating the spread of the coronavirus,” said Brian Morgenstern, deputy White House press secretary, on Tuesday.

He added that the announcement made means those struggling to pay rent because of the pandemic will not have to fuss about eviction and “risk further spreading of or exposure to the disease, due to economic hardship.”

Market Watch explained that landlords may still evict tenants in certain cases. These cases include instances that involve the destruction of property or threat to health or safety.
