This guidance, described as “reprehensible” by Administrator Deanne Criswell, led to the FEMA official’s immediate dismissal. The directive reportedly affected at least 20 households, particularly in areas heavily damaged by Hurricane Helene, where survivors needed urgent assistance. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis condemned the incident, calling it “targeted discrimination” and a misuse of government power against Trump-supporting Floridians. He announced that the Florida Division of Emergency Management would conduct a thorough investigation.

The incident has since attracted the attention of the House Oversight Committee, with Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., requesting FEMA’s Director to testify. Comer emphasized the need for FEMA to uphold impartiality in its disaster relief efforts, particularly in politically charged contexts. FEMA, in response, reiterated its commitment to providing aid to all survivors, regardless of political views.
