Stereotype Shock: First African-American AGA in Kentucky is… A Republican

Published
3 years agoon

Attorney Daniel Cameron, former legal counsel for Senator Mitch McConnell, was elected to be Kentucky Attorney General – the first Republican to be elected such position in more than 70 years. He is also the first African-American to be elected to this position. Cameron shares the heartwarming feeling of seeing people express their support for the idea of running regardless of political affiliation. According to The Herald-Leger, Cameron is a “conservative who ran on his opposition to abortion, gun control, and illegal immigration.”

Cameron will be replacing Democrat Andy Beshear. Cameron said he would “get back to the bread-and-butter basics of being the chief law enforcement officer in defending and enforcing the laws.” According to Cameron, his priorities as attorney general would be “to tackle Kentucky’s opioid epidemic and crimes against children, in addition to ensuring Kentucky does not become a so-called ‘sanctuary state’ for undocumented immigrants.”
HISTORY MADE!

Trump campaigned in Kentucky and endorsed Cameron, saying that “a star is born.” Chris Barron, a Republican strategist, tweeted “If a Republican wins a state AG race for the first time in 70 years and a Republican also loses a Governors race in KY maybe it’s about the candidates and not a referendum on the President.”
Cameron overcame allegations that he was too inexperienced for the job as he graduated law school 8 years ago and served as Mr. McConnell’s legal counsel in Washington from 2015 to 2017 and worked at a private law firm since 2017. He also said that his “closeness with the Trump administration would help secure federal resources for the state’s fight against drugs.”
