Two Grammy Awards Nominations For Drake
This year, the Canadian rapper received a nomination for best rap performance for “Way 2 Sexy” which also features Young Thug and Future. Drake also earned a Grammy Awards nomination for best rap album for his “Certified Lover Boy.”
A source said that Drake and his management team sent a request to the Recording Academy to remove his nominations.
As a result, his 2022 nominations are not on display on the Grammy’s website. In its list of updates, the awards body also reflected the withdrawal.
Unclear Why Drake Wants Nominations Removed
However, the reason for the four-time Grammy Awards winner’s withdrawal remains a mystery. Then again, Drake spoke out against the academy for its high-profile snubs of the fellow artist The Weeknd last year.
“I think we should stop allowing ourselves to be shocked every year by the disconnect between impactful music and these awards,” Drake said at the time.
He urged people to just accept that the Grammy Awards “no longer matter to the artists that exist now and the ones that come after,” he added.
“It’s like a relative you keep expecting to fix up but they just can’t change their ways,” Drake concluded. Ironically, The Weeknd’s threat to boycott future Grammy Awards didn’t faze the body. The artists managed to secure three Grammy nominations for the 2022 ceremony.
Drake Unhappy Over Previous Nominations and Wins
In addition, the rapper also expressed his frustration over previous nominations and victories. Reportedly, Drake declined to submit his mixtape More Life for consideration for the 2018 Grammys.
He also complained that the Recording Academy kept recognizing him as a rap artist when he was coming out with pop hits.
In fact, the single “Hotline Bling” won best rap song and best rap/sung collaboration at the 2017 ceremony. “I’m a Black artist, I’m apparently a rapper, even though ‘Hotline Bling’ is not a rap song,” Drake said.
“The only category that they can manage to fit me in is in a rap category, maybe because I’ve rapped in the past or because I’m Black,” he added.
This year, Drake’s rapper persona may just be too inviting for the Recording Academy. Despite the two nominations, he does not have anything listed outside the rap category.
