A group of Republicans in the House of Representatives is planning to join former President Donald Trump for his visit to the southern border next week.

Members of the Republican Study Committee, the largest GOP caucus in the House of Representatives, plan on coming with Trump at the border, Politico reported Wednesday.

According to a spokesperson for Rep. Jim Banks (R-Ind.), who is the said committee’s chair, the lawmaker would join around a dozen members going to the border next week. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott would also join them.

House Republicans Intend to Carry On the Trump Border Immigration Legacy in Congress

In a statement, Banks said that Trump spent four years addressing the issues at the border, but Biden managed to break it again. He noted that the country is now experiencing “the worst border crisis in our history.”

Banks went on to say that, for this reason, the RSC made it their priority in Congress to continue Trump’s legacy regarding immigration at the border. He said they want to “explain” the ways they could “end this national embarrassment”

This trip will serve as the second meeting between RSC members and the former president this month. Leaders of the committee previously met with Trump at his resort in Bedminster, New Jersey.

Immigration is an issue many Republicans deem as one which can sway American voters while the current administration continues to struggle in solving the border crisis.

Several House Republican groups already visited the border to draw the people’s attention to the immigration crisis taking place.

House GOP leadership has presented an immigration framework, which the RSC helped in creating. Banks says it serves as “guardrails for any future immigration deal.”

Last week, Trump revealed that he had accepted Abbott’s invitation to go to the border.

The said trip aims to call attention to how the former president’s administration left Biden with a secure border, only to have effective and strong policies undone, rolling back on the progress on controlling illegal immigration.

In a press release, Trump described the border as an “unmitigated disaster zone.”
