New York: Judge holds Trump in Contempt after Failing to Comply with AG

A New York Supreme Court judge held former President Donald Trump in civil contempt on Monday, ordering him to pay $10,000 every day until he fully complies with New York Attorney General Letitia James's subpoena in her investigation of the Trump Organization.

James has been looking for different financial records following former Trump attorney Michael Cohen telling Congress that the former president had exaggerated the values of several assets on statements so that he could get more advantageous terms when getting loans or for tax purposes.

Earlier in April, James’ office asked for these daily fines, arguing that Trump needed to be held in contempt for failing to turn over the documents by the March 31 deadline. According to Trump attorney Alina Habba, any of the documents the former president has not turned over were with the Trump organization and not Trump personally.

In the end, Judge Arthur Engoron ruled that the former president has not done a proper search for the materials and was thus not in compliance with another court order – a previous one issued in February.

“Today, justice prevailed,” she posted on Twitter. “Our investigation into Donald Trump and the Trump Organization’s financial dealings will continue undeterred because no one is above the law.”

When reporters tried to ask Habba questions upon leaving the courthouse, the judge declined to make a comment.
