Kaepernick Sits Through “Racist” Anthem

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick sat through our national anthem in his 3rd straight pre-season game on Saturday.
When asked about his sitting down he had the following to say, “I am not going to stand up and show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color. To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way.”
He also went on to reference police as people getting paid leave while getting away with murder. Kaepernick has become increasingly vocal in his anti-police and pro-Black Lives Matter stances. Lately, his twitter has been a dumping ground of racist examples and hostility towards white culture as collected from the internet.
The NFL came out with a statement and said, “players are encouraged, but not required, to stand during the playing of the national anthem.” They also said that Kaepernick would not be suspended from any games.
Many are quick to point out the hypocrisy of a man paid millions protesting inequality in society. Either way, it is an issue that seems to be dividing football fans right before the start of the season.
In the end, it is Colin Kaepernick’s absolute right to sit during the anthem and rather we like it or not that is the point of the first amendment. We don’t have to agree with it. However, if you can’t stomach that from the quarterback of your team, then I suggest you voice that by changing the channel, skipping games, and most important supporting teams and sports that you can agree with.
