Chief legal officers from 16 Republican states are demanding that President Joe Biden reactivate the Keystone XL Pipeline. The President revoked the permit for the $9 billion pipelines during his first day in office back in January 2021.

However, the current high prices of oil and gas are now making his decision seem short-sighted.

Along with attorneys general of 15 other states, the group noted the hypocrisy of the US importing oil from Canada.  Joining Montana were Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Indiana, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, West Virginia, and Wyoming.

Specifically, the Attorney General from each state signed a statement urging the federal government to reconsider reopening the pipeline.

The Keystone XL pipeline was a key infrastructure designed to transport oil from Alberta, Canada to the United States.

The 1,2000-mile project was still in its construction phase when Biden signed an order killing the project. By June 2021, Canadian company TC Energy, the project’s corporate backer, abandoned the endeavor.

Detrimental Consequences

In addition, the AGs’ statement warned Biden of “detrimental consequences” should he continue to refuse to reinstate the Keystone XL pipeline.

“Consumers would pay higher prices, and our allies would become further dependent on Russian and Middle Eastern oil. We hate to say we told you so,” the states wrote.

Knudsen and company’s letter comes amid the US suffering from record-breaking inflation rates and sky-high gas prices. In an interview, Knudsen outlined the problems that reinvigorating the pipeline can solve.

“We’re seeing 50 plus percent increases in the price of gasoline. I don’t care if you’re in Montana or if you’re in Virginia. Everybody bears that cost and that hurts. Fuel is what drives our economy and we have to be able to drive our vehicles. We have to be able to heat our homes,” he said.

Importing Oil from Canada

Even as Russia invaded Ukraine, Europeans remained powerless to sanction Russia by banning its oil exports. They cannot do so without risking their country's severe oil shortages.

Russia is a major exporter of oil and natural gas to many European countries. Meanwhile, Biden made a head-scratching decision to ban Russian oil imports but then decided to get oil from Canada.

Republicans noted that the Keystone pipeline would have delivered that oil had it gone online.

According to the attorney general, Biden’s “excessive regulations” are unnecessarily bringing energy costs higher. In February 2021, the President ordered a stop to all oil and gas leases on federal lands.

Earlier this month, the administration will resume the leases but will require higher fees and reduced land usage. Knudsen noted that the new terms are so unfavorable that companies might hesitate to enter into new agreements.

Americans Deprived of the Benefits from the Keystone XL Pipeline

In addition, Knudsen et al also called out Biden for denying Americans the benefit of the 1,200-mile-long oil pipeline.

“Your decisions, however, have stripped Americans of the manifold benefits the Keystone XL pipeline would deliver—jobs, tax revenue, and new and sustained economic opportunities,” they wrote.

“There is no end in sight to the painfully high energy costs or inflation that Americans are now enduring because of your failed policies. Stop the quiet conversations with foreign powers and oligarchs.

The solutions are right here at home.  On behalf of the citizens of our states, we demand you immediately take the actions outlined above to reverse the damage you have done and provide relief for struggling families and businesses.”
