It seems that President Donald Trump is not ready to anoint a successor for the MAGA movement. While Vice President JD Vance is widely seen as the front-runner for the 2028 Republican nomination, the President has increasingly praised Secretary of State Marco Rubio, signaling an open contest for the top job. Trump teased both men about their ambitions and hinted at different ticket combinations, suggesting he could support either a Vance-Rubio or a Rubio-Vance pairing.
Trump’s Calculated Approach to Picking a Successor
Trump has built his political brand on keeping rivals and allies alike off balance, and his approach to succession appears no different. According to multiple reports, he has told insiders that any successor must earn his backing rather than inherit it. This deliberate uncertainty has stoked competition between Rubio and Vance while keeping other ambitious Republicans on alert.
The president’s reluctance to commit may also be rooted in his own political calculations. He has publicly floated the idea of serving a third term despite constitutional limits, making him less inclined to focus on life after the White House. Even so, his influence over the Republican Party’s future leadership remains unmatched. Other potential contenders, including governors and senators with strong conservative credentials, are unlikely to make moves without gauging Trump’s stance.
Marco Rubio’s Rise Inside MAGA World
Marco Rubio’s current standing with Trump is a sharp contrast to their contentious 2016 primary battle, when Trump mocked him as “Little Marco” and Rubio questioned Trump’s fitness for office. Since then, Rubio has worked to align himself with the MAGA agenda, serving as both Secretary of State and national security adviser. He has become a trusted troubleshooter on foreign policy, handling crises in Ukraine and Gaza while advancing hardline immigration measures that resonate with Trump’s base.
These moves have won over many former skeptics in MAGA circles. Breitbart founder Steve Bannon has said Rubio “convinced the doubters,” a remarkable turnaround for a politician once labeled “Marco Amnesty Rubio” by conservative media. Trump has rewarded this loyalty with public praise and private confidence, even expressing concern over Rubio’s health when he delayed a vaccine dose during a busy diplomatic stretch.
While Rubio has told Fox News that Vance would be a “great nominee,” he has not ruled out a 2028 run. People close to him suggest he would consider running on a joint ticket with Vance, but the open praise from Trump suggests he may also be preparing for a solo bid if the opportunity arises.
JD Vance’s Position as the Early Favorite
JD Vance entered the White House as Trump’s running mate in 2024, chosen for his ability to energize the MAGA base and appeal to working-class voters. The “Hillbilly Elegy” author quickly became one of Trump’s most aggressive political defenders, taking on high-profile legislative battles and foreign policy disputes. His role as finance chair of the Republican National Committee has also deepened his connections with major donors, bolstering his credentials for a future presidential campaign.
Polls consistently show Vance as the most likely GOP nominee in 2028, and his allies are already fielding questions from donors about where to place early contributions. Vance’s close relationship with Trump’s inner circle, including Donald Trump Jr. and conservative activist Charlie Kirk, strengthens his position as the movement’s natural heir.
However, Rubio’s growing stature and ability to navigate both domestic and foreign policy challenges could complicate Vance’s path. While the two men maintain a cooperative working relationship, Trump’s public musings about different ticket orders ensure that neither can take the president’s support for granted.
The jockeying between Rubio and Vance will likely intensify as the 2028 race approaches, with both seeking to demonstrate their loyalty to Trump while proving they can carry the MAGA movement into its next chapter.
