- Rahami was suspected after he appeared on video footage messing with a duffel bag just before the explosion in Chelsea that left 29 wounded.
- Two officers were also wounded in the shootout with Rahami.
- Officials believe that Rahami was part of a terror cell operating out of the area and that more suspects remain at large.
On Monday morning, New York and New Jersey conducted statewide manhunts for a suspect by the name of Ahmad Khan Rahami, a man they wanted to question in connection with the bombings that happened over the weekend. Rahami is a 28-year-old American citizen of Afghanistan decent. He was never on the terror watchlist.
Just before noon, police found Ahmad Khan Rahami and have taken him into custody following a brief shootout in Linden, New Jersey. Rahami was injured in the shootout along with two officers, none of the injuries appear to be life-threatening.
The worst explosion on Saturday left 29 injured in Chelsea, but thankfully no one was killed. Several other explosive devices were found in New York and New Jersey, including a backpack found in Elizabeth, New Jersey that may have contained as many as five different devices before it was detonated by a bomb robot. There was also a bomb that went off at the start of a Marine charity marathon, but thankfully due to a delay, no one was injured.
Officials first suspected Ahmad Khan Rahami after they believed he was the man seen in surveillance videos rolling a duffel bag near the scene of the bombing in Chelsea.
On Monday, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo talked about the connection to the explosive devices and said that he, “wouldn't be surprised if we found a foreign connection to the act.”
The bombs that exploded in New York were pressure cooker bombs filled with BBs and ball bearings. The explosive devices n New Jersey were made differently, but police have said that there are similarities between all of the explosive devices found.
Although police have taken their primary suspect into custody, investigators still believe more people were involved in the New York and New Jersey bombing plots. Local law enforcement has even mentioned that they believe there is a terror cell working out of the area.
