Police and Protesters Demanding Justice for George Floyd Gather in Prayer
On Saturday, protesters have gathered outside of the Coral Gables station house in Miami-Dade County. While protests demanding justice for George Floyd in other parts of the country ended in violence, police and protesters in this area came together in a moment of prayer.
“As leaders of this profession, we (chiefs and community) must all do better at improving on our training and protocols so that our efforts towards building and maintaining community trust are not lost or overshadowed,” wrote Miami-Dade Corrections spokesman Juan Diasgranados, who was also at the protest.
“Transparency during this time is key to demonstrating law enforcement’s commitment to serving and protecting our residents with dignity, humanity, and respect,” Diasgranados added.

CBS Miami reported that the Miami-Dade Chiefs of Police Association took a knee while someone led the group in prayer.
The demonstrators held signs and chanted “Black lives matter!” and “No justice, no peace. No racist police.”
“That could be my father,” says one of the men there, as reported by CBS Miami. He also said, “That could be my brother. That could be anybody, to be honest. And even if it’s not putting yourself directly in that person’s shoes, you just have to feel empathy for that person going through that, simply because he was black.”
“You don’t have to be black to be mad,” says one woman in attendance. “You just have to be a human being, and that’s what this is showing.”
