President Trump received a nomination for the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize. This came weeks after he helped broker peace between Israel and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Christian Tybring-Gjedde, a member of the Norwegian Parliament, submitted the nomination.

“For his merit, I think he has done more trying to create peace between nations than most other Peace Prize nominees,” Tybring-Gjedde told Fox News.

According to Tybring-Gjedde, the Trump administration played a significant role in establishing relations between Israel and the UAE.

“As it is expected other Middle Eastern countries will follow in the footsteps of the UAE, this agreement could be a game changer that will turn the Middle East into a region of cooperation and prosperity,” he wrote in his nomination letter to the Nobel Committee.

Fox News reported that he also wrote about Trump’s “key role in facilitating contact between conflicting parties and … creating new dynamics in other protracted conflicts, such as the Kashmir border dispute between India and Pakistan, and the conflict between North and South Korea, as well as dealing with the nuclear capabilities of North Korea.”

Trump then responded to the news by saying thanks on Twitter.

However, according to The Guardian, the bar for nomination for the prize is low. This is the case “as nominations are accepted from any politician serving at a national level, or from heads of state.”

Tybring-Gjedde, along with another Norwegian official, also submitted a nomination for Trump in 2018. It happened “following the U.S. president’s Singapore summit with Kim Jong Un,” according to Fox News. Trump did not win at the time.
