President Trump and Twitter

President Trump spends absolutely zero dollars to tweet on a daily basis and yet he is using this tool to talk to his followers whenever and about whatever he decides. There are those people who say this is lunacy, but there are others who believe he is a marketing genius.

This patriot falls in the opinion of the latter. Donald Trump has over 63 million followers on Twitter. He has tweeted literally over 40,000 times and counting. There are days when he tweets to his followers dozens of times. When he tweets, the news media often repeats what he says on Twitter and he gets instant news coverage. President Trump's Twitter account gives him more mileage than a normal press release.

Is Tweeting Presidential?

Even though Donald Trump is president, his tweets are not necessarily “presidential.” He still throws in insults and cat calls to get the attention of world leaders and to keep people seemingly off guard. Even in the recent tweet about hurricane Dorian and FEMA, President Trump tweeted,

“We are tracking closely tropical storm Dorian as it heads, as usual, to Puerto Rico. FEMA and all others are ready, and will do a great job. When they do, let them know it, and give them a big Thank You – Not like last time. That includes from the incompetent Mayor of San Juan!”

The last comment probably would not have been thrown in there by most presidents, but this was classic Trump. And, the last comment was the one that caused this tweet to get more mileage than normal. People who are studying Twitter estimate this tweet has been repeated more than one hundred times plus than it would have been repeated because of the last insult.

Is Donald Trump doing these things by accident on Twitter or is he a Twitter genius? Well, President Trump would tell you he’s a genius, of course. As a patriot, I lean toward believing some of the tweets are absolutely for marketing purposes and to gain attention. Are they the best representation of the office of the President of the United States? Probably not.

However, Twitter could be presidential, and President Trump has made some very presidential tweets so we know he is able to use his Twitter account to sound more like a commander and chief of the free world. However, most of the time, he appears to be trying to get attention from either a certain block of voters or to attract the news media to whatever he is saying in order to either attract attention to events or distract attention to events.

Effective Use of Social Media

Whichever the case, Donald Trump is effective at using social media. And from both supporters and detractors, he receives kudos for his use of this media form. This has never been achieved to this extent and Donald Trump has the way he uses Twitter down to a fine art. President Trump is able to get his message out quicker on Twitter than calling a press conference. The press conferences still happen, but most people look to Twitter and listen to the tweets to see what President Trump is actually going to say next.

The 2020 campaign is getting ready to begin. Right now, Democrats are still working to see who is going to challenge this President. But people who are watching Twitter and waiting to see how President Trump will handle this campaign and his Presidency on Twitter simultaneously. Time and events will tell. But one can be sure, Twitter will be buzzing more than ever!
