Retired St. Louis Police Captain Gets Killed by Looter During Protest
On Tuesday, a public visitation was held for retired St. Louis police captain David Dorn. Dorn was shot and killed by a looter during the George Floyd protests.
According to Fox News, Dorn was killed while “trying to protect his friend’s pawn shop, Lee’s Pawn and Jewelry, during the early hours of June 2, after a protest turned violent.” Also, he was killed by looters who broke into the pawnshop.
24-year-old suspect Stephan Cannon was charged with first-degree murder, first-degree robbery, and first-degree burglary. He was also charged as a felon in possession of a firearm, and three counts of armed criminal action.
“At the time the shots were fired, (Cannon) was the only person standing at that corner,” read a police probable cause statement. Also, according to police, “multiple plumes of smoke” can be seen coming from where Cannon was standing, as reported by CBS News.
“Based upon the diligent work of the police department, collaboration with the Circuit Attorney’s Office, and the cooperation from the outraged community, we have issued charges for the tragic murder of former Captain David Dorn,” said St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kimberly M. Gardner.

According to former St. Louis County Police Chief Tim Fitch, he knew Dorn for 30 years. He described his personality as “bigger than life.”
St. Louis police Chief John Hayden also talked about Dorn and said: “Many of us, the other officers, looked up to him. Was very well-liked, very pleasant. And his wife still works here. So a very sad time for our agency. We will honor him.”
“[Dorn] was murdered by looters at a pawn shop. He was the type of brother that would've given his life to save them if he had to,” wrote the Ethical Society of Police of St. Louis. “Violence is not the answer, whether it's a citizen or officer,” it then added.
Fox News also reported that Dorn served 38 years with the St. Louis police.
