Rapper Releases Satan Shoes With Real Blood In It

Rapper Lil Nas X, or Montero Lamar Hill in real life, released a limited line of customized Nike sneakers. Dubbed the “Satan Shoes,” the pairs of customized Air Max 97s  featured satanic imagery throughout the shoes and the box. In addition, each pair will contain 60cc of red ink and one drop of human blood along the soles. Fittingly, only 666 pairs are available for sale.

For the shoes, Lil Nas X teamed up with MSCHF to release the sneakers, which will sell for $1,018 a pair beginning March 29. The sneakers will feature designs such as the Prince of Darkness and his kingdom, a pentagram on the laces, and a drop of blood mixed among red ink along the soles. Buyers can only order the shoes on the MSCHF app.   

MSCHF Behind Satan Shoes

Dubbed the “Satan Shoes,” they are heavily modified shoes made by MSCHF,  a secretive company that sells items designed to go viral. MSCHF describes itself as a dairy company, whose marketing and sales practices do not follow any conventional means. Prior to the Satan shoes, they released a toaster oven-shaped bath bomb, an app that disguises Netflix video watching into a conference call, a squeaking rubber chicken bong, and a YouTube channel that shows weird videos. 

Meanwhile, athletic shoe titan Nike disavowed any connection with the sneakers. Last Sunday,  Nike said that the company has nothing to do with the release or the design of the shoes. However, the company did not condemn the design nor the intention. Snopes, the fact-checking site, said that Lil Nas X and MSCHF did use Nike Air Max 97s. But, “Nike did not release nor design these shoes,” a Nike spokesperson said. The abomination was a collaboration entirely between the rapper and MSCHF. 

Music Video 

Lil Nas X also launched the music video for his newest single, “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” in support of the sneakers. The video’s imagery shows the rapper amid biblical and occult imagery, beginning from the Garden of Eden to the depths of Hell. The journey shown in the video is reportedly a symbolism of Hill’s journey as a black, gay artist. 

After being stoned to death by supposedly judgmental figures, Hill descends into Hell via a stripper pole, There, he proceeds to give Satan, who is wearing his shoes, a lap dance. Afterward, Hill snaps the devil’s neck then wears his horns. For the video, Hill reportedly consulted satanic religions. “He obviously did his homework. Whether he consulted with us directly or did his own research, he clearly put a lot of effort into this video,” said David Harris, the magister of the Church. 

Twitter Outrage

As more and more people raged against the crass product, North Dakota Governor Kristi Noem took to Twitter to blast the publicity stunt. She tweeted a rant against the shoes and how they market the product to children. “Our kids are being told that this kind of product is, not only okay, it's “exclusive.” But do you know what's more exclusive? Their God-given eternal soul. We are in a fight for the soul of our nation. We need to fight hard. And we need to fight smart. We have to win,” Noem tweeted. 

As the outrage over the shoes grew, Lil Nas X tweeted an apparent apology. However, clicking the link only led users to a youtube channel featuring the rapper’s Montero music video. Also, the rapper went to Twitter to reply to Noem. “Ur a whole governor and u on here tweeting about some damn shoes. do ur job!” he tweeted. He also posted a picture of white Nike Air Max 97 with a Chick-Fil-A logo and “John 3:16” designs. “we have decided to drop these to even the score. damn y’all happy now?” he added.
