Sleepy Joe Adds to Border Crisis by Ending Trump’s ‘Remain in Mexico’ Policy for “Asylum-Seekers”
The administration of President Joe Biden officially ends the “remain in Mexico” policy that former President Donald Trump put in place in connection to immigrants trying to seek asylum inside the United States.
A memo issued on Tuesday from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has halted the implementation of the Migrant Protection Protocols. This follows Biden’s executive order issued on Feb. 2 to have the said Trump-era policy reviewed for termination.
The said Trump policy made those seeking asylum in the country wait in Mexico while their documents are being processed.
Biden Ends “Remain in Mexico” Policy Made by Trump
Many have slammed the Biden administration’s rollback of the Trump-era immigration policies. They also blamed it for the border crisis. In the first three months of Biden’s presidency, the rate of border apprehensions exceeded the number of the entire year prior to his inauguration.
In response to the ongoing crisis, Biden put Vice President Kamala Harris in charge of the situation at the border. He also said he couldn’t think of anybody better qualified for the job.
The said memo issued by DHS secretary Alejandro Mayorjas also alleged that the policy did not have a significant effect, as seen in the increase of arrests at the border.
However, a DHS analysis from November 2019 revealed that the MPP was successful in returning many asylum-seekers to their home countries.
