Former President Donald Trump assured that he would have handled the U.S. exit in Afghanistan much differently if he was still in the White House.
In an appearance on “Hannity” on Tuesday night, Trump was asked about what he would have done given the situation. He answered: “We would have hit them very hard. Again, the words are conditions, plural, conditions-based. It was an agreement where, actually, we wanted to get out by May 1st, and they violated the agreement.”
He went on to say that “we didn’t” because of a huge agreement with many different standpoints. However, he added that “frankly, Biden didn’t even have to go by that agreement.”
Trump then pointed at how the Biden administration handled the border crisis. He said that the U.S. had the strongest southern border during his administration and stopped the crimes that came along with illegal immigration. Now, Trump said the “worst people in the world” are coming into the country.
He then likened the situation in Afghanistan to the border crisis but “handled even worse.” The former president then criticized Biden even further, saying Biden’s way of handling the border crisis is the worst in U.S. History. “We had the most secure border we’ve ever had, now we have by far the worst border we’ve ever had.”

“Afghanistan is the exact same thing,” he went on to say, adding: “Think of this, we have a military that’s holding it. I had it reduced down to 2,500 soldiers and they were doing a good job. It was fine. It was a smaller force. I took it down from close to twenty (thousand) to 2,500. And we were fine.”
Trump: Afghanistan Is like the Border Crisis but Handled Much Worse
He then pointed out that the U.S. had the military in Afghanistan but pulled them out before letting the civilians withdraw first. He said, “And before we took the interpreters and others — we want to try to help them.”
Trump then clarified his stance that “I’m America First. Okay? The Americans come out first.” However, he also said that the U.S. also still needed to help the people who helped them. Although, he also said they had to be cautious with the “vetting” there are still some “rough people in there.” Nevertheless, he said they would have to help those people.
Trump then added that, if he was in charge, he would let the military withdraw last. He said “Last. The people were coming out, they were going to come out, but the agreement was violated, so I held things back, because we weren’t going to do anything. Again, conditions-based.”
The former president then said, “So, they weren’t fulfilling their obligations and conditions.”
In the interview, the former president then laid out what would’ve been his course of action regarding the U.S. military weapons and equipment. Trump mentioned that America has “Billions and billions of dollars worth of Black Hawk helicopters” and that, when he would have taken those out, China and Russia would watch them do so, “because it’s the greatest in the world.”
Trump then revealed that the U.S. has a lot of brand new tanks, equipment, and weapons. He stated that he had planned to take those out because he “knew they weren’t going to fight.”
Apart from revealing how he would’ve handled the U.S. exit in Afghanistan, Trump also stated why he thinks the Afghan army chose not to put up a better fight.
He said he believes the Afghan troops are only doing it for the paycheck. Trump added that once the U.S. stopped being there, the Afghan troops also stopped fighting.
The former president concluded that he thinks it’s “a great thing” that the U.S. withdrew from Afghanistan already. However, he still reiterated that no one has handled a withdrawal worse than Biden. He added that “This is the greatest embarrassment, I believe, in the history of our country.”
