Trump Gives Medal of Freedom to House Ally Jim Jordan
President Trump on Monday awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor, to Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), one of the president's staunchest loyalists in Congress, citing his defenses of Trump against impeachment and the Russia investigation.
On Monday, President Donald Trump presented the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which is the highest civilian honor in the US, to Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio).
Jordan is a staunch Trump loyalist who is a member of Congress. In awarding the medal, Trump cited Jordan defending him against impeachment and the Russian investigation.
President Trump presented the medal to Jordan during a closed-door ceremony. The event happened at the White House on the same day House Democrats tried to move forward with their plans to impeach the president for the second time. This comes amid the indignation over the role Trump played in last week’s storming of the Capitol building by a mob of his supporters. The said riot resulted in the death of four people and the arrest of at least 70.
Jordan was among the GOP legislators who objected to the certification of the 2020 presidential election results. This certification confirms that President-elect Joe Biden will assume the role of president. He maintains this position even after the riot happened.
The schedule of the ceremony was not publicized by the White House. However, it sent out a press release, which praised Jordan and his record while in Congress. The press release also cited his role in uncovering ‘The Fast and Furious” scandal which happened during the Obama administration. It also cited the news about the IRS targeting conservative organizations.
Trump Honors Political Allies with Medal of Freedom
Usually, figures who have contributed significantly to a certain field or those who defended the interests of the country are the ones who receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom. However, President Trump has awarded the medal to his political allies, especially as he approaches the end of his administration.
Last week, the president awarded the honor to Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) who also opposed the Russia investigation. He also gave it to radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh. Many expect the president to present the medal to Bill Belichick, the head coach of the New England Patriots.
White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany released a statement about Jordan. In it, she lauded Jordan for opposing the Russian investigation during the 2016 election “confronting senior Justice Department officials for obstructing Congress and exposing the fraudulent origins of the Russia collusion lie.”
She also cited Jordan’s role in defending the president against his impeachment. She called Jordan “an inspiration to freedom-loving Americans everywhere and has distinguished himself as one of the most consequential members of Congress of his generation.”
