Twitter Says Suspension of Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene was ‘In Error’
On Friday, Twitter admitted that it mistakenly suspended the account of Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene. The said lawmaker is currently facing a push by Democratic lawmakers, aiming to expel her from Congress.
The social media site had suspended Greene’s account before. However, it said it already lifted the most recent suspension.
According to a Twitter spokesperson, they use both technology and human review to make sure their rules are being followed. However, in the case of Greene’s recent suspension, Twitter’s automated system locked out the account due to an error. The spokesperson then added that they have reversed this.
The lawmaker is known to have promoted pro-Trump conspiracies and has supported the call for violence that targets Democrats. This is according to a campaign message pointing out that Twitter suspended Greene’s account with no explanation.
Initially, Greene’s account was meant to be suspended for 12 hours, as per the campaign message. The lawmaker had previously faced Twitter suspension in January for spreading misinformation.
Greene Believes Timing of Twitter Suspension Is Suspicious
The representative’s office felt suspicious of the timing, given that the lockout happened hours before Democratic Rep. Jimmy Gomez (Calif.) brought forth a resolution that aims to expel Greene from Congress.
No evidence existed to back up the claim, but Greene reiterated this on Friday, after Twitter lifted the accidental suspension.
On Friday, Gomez took to the House floor and said that he believes one of his Republican colleagues “wish harm upon this legislative body.”
Gomez went on to say that he was not saying this to shock people. On the contrary, he concluded this after a lawmaker rallied for violence against their fellow lawmakers and the government.
According to a spokesman for Gomez, 72 Democrats in the House of Representatives have decided to co-sponsor the resolution. The said resolution would expel Greene from the House of Representatives.
Some notable co-sponsors of the resolution include New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, California Reps. Eric Swalwell and Maxine Waters, as well as Texas Rep. Joaquin Castro.
