Two Shootings Occur on Same Night in Las Vegas Following Protests
A police officer in Las Vegas was shot in the head overnight Monday. He was still fighting for his life on Tuesday night. A 20-year-old suspect has been taken into custody and charged with attempted murder.
29-year-old officer Shay Mikalonis of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department was in critical condition after suspect Edgar Samaniego “allegedly fired at officers from across the street on Las Vegas Boulevard,” Fox News said in a report. This was while the officers were attempting to disperse a group of protesters.
The shooting happened following peaceful protests over the death of George Floyd – a black man who died in police custody.
According to FOX5, Las Vegas police tweeted that Homicide Detectives responded to the scene. Then, they located surveillance of Samaniego firing a handgun at the officers. SWAT officers then responded to the scene and took him into custody. He was then brought to the Clark County Detention Center.

Then, a second overnight shooting event involved an armed man killed in a shooting in downtown Las Vegas. Nevada resident Jorge Gomez had three weapons during the incident, as reported by FOX5. Nonlethal bullets reportedly struck him before he raised his firearm. Police opened fire at that time.
He was brought to UMC Hospital where he later died.
“Update from @lvmpd: Police say they believe this man acted alone. His name is George Jorge Gomez. Police say he was armed, pointed a gun at officers. They fired at him. He was shot & killed. This is separate from the shooting that critically injured a police officer,” tweeted broadcast journalist Christine Maddela.
Gov. Steve Sisolak issued a statement on the shootings. He said, “Last night there were two officer involved shootings in Las Vegas. I know this is a difficult day for Nevada. And it’s during these trying times we must remind ourselves that creating a state where justice and peace exist together in partnership, not as a binary choice, is the goal we must all work toward. I am committed to doing all I can.”
