University Of Chicago Bulldozes Their “Safe Spaces”

    • The University of Chicago sent a letter to incoming freshmen explaining that there would be no “safe space” for them on campus.
    • The letter is in response to protests all over the nation’s colleges by students who disagree with chosen speakers or topics.
    • Although there has been some backlash from certain groups, the overwhelming response to the letter has been positive from both students and faculty.

The University of Chicago has had enough of safe spaces, trigger warnings, and students protesting against free speech.

In a landmark letter sent to all incoming freshmen, the university has taken up the defense of free speech.

“Our commitment to academic freedom means that we do not support so-called ‘trigger warnings,’ we do not cancel invited speakers because their topics might prove controversial, and we do not condone the creation of intellectual ‘safe spaces’ where individuals can retreat from ideas and perspectives at odds with their own,” reads the letter from Dean of Students Jay Ellison.

This is in response to the trend of universities around the country bowing down and catering to any sort of liberal group that feels angered by one speaker or another. It doesn’t matter if it’s a feminist group, Black Lives Matter, or an anti-Isreal group, all have demanded their way and thrown around accusations of racist, sexist, and fascist when they feel threatened by someone’s words.

Although not as notable as some, University of Chicago had at least three different speakers forced off the stage last semester due to these student protests. Thankfully, it looks like they will be the first university to stand up and defend first amendment rights.

After all, you have freedom of speech, not freedom from speech.

This has already gathered wide support from professors and students alike, with the predictable outcry from the few groups who make it their full-time job to be offended. I hope that this is the beginning of a trend and that universities across the nation take back their campuses.
