A Day Before the Election, Fences Go Up Around Washington DC to Increase White House Security

With Election Day around the corner, Washington D.C. is taking unprecedented steps to bolster White House security and secure key government buildings, including the U.S. Capitol and Vice President Kamala Harris’s residence. The decision to reinforce White House security with fences, barriers, and additional personnel reflects a learned caution from past events, such as the 2020 election aftermath and the January 6th Capitol attack, where protests escalated into widespread civil unrest. Although there are no current credible threats, authorities aim to proactively protect the capital and its residents from potential disturbances in the coming days.

What’s With the Increased White House Security?

The fortified security preparations signal that federal and local agencies have taken lessons from recent history. In 2020, post-election protests led to sporadic violence across D.C., and the January 6th events vividly demonstrated the risks of unpreparedness. This time, authorities are working in collaboration to ensure both public safety and confidence. The Secret Service, D.C. police, and other agencies have implemented extensive measures, including eight-foot-high fencing around the White House and bicycle-rack barriers around the Capitol, designed to create a buffer zone and minimize the risk of escalated demonstrations near these key sites.

Past incidents have shown the importance of such precautions. Following George Floyd’s death in 2020, protests near the White House and Lafayette Square devolved into violent clashes. Stores in downtown D.C. suffered significant damage, and a basement fire erupted at St. John’s Church, symbolizing the city’s vulnerabilities in times of unrest. By implementing security measures early, officials hope to avoid a repeat of such incidents, aiming to secure Washington’s landmarks and reassure citizens that White House security is a priority.

Enhanced Security Measures In and Around the Nation’s Capital

D.C. authorities are mobilizing all 3,300 police officers to work extended 12-hour shifts with restricted leave. The Secret Service has also tightened White House security networks, coordinating with local and federal partners to ensure Election Day safety. Around the White House and nearby government buildings, metal fences and bicycle racks are being used as barriers. Even in areas without direct federal oversight, such as commercial zones around the Golden Triangle Business Improvement District, local businesses have been encouraged to develop contingency plans for potential unrest.

As a preventative measure, White House security is not only focused on D.C. but also on other areas tied to key political events. For instance, the Secret Service is placing physical security outside the West Palm Beach, Florida, convention center where Donald Trump will host his Election Night gathering. Recognizing the importance of preemptive action, property owners in downtown D.C. have also taken steps, reinforcing windows and installing temporary barriers to deter potential looting.

How Businesses and Local Agencies are Responding

The heightened security efforts extend beyond government facilities. Downtown businesses near the White House, such as office complexes and retail spaces, have been advised to be “ready with a plan” to secure their premises. According to Leon A. Beresford, executive vice president of Admiral Security Services, many commercial buildings are enhancing staffing for security and maintenance, preparing for any damage control in the days after the election. This coordinated approach underscores a citywide commitment to maintaining order without assuming the worst.

Not all businesses, however, are boarding up. In fact, some entrepreneurs near tourist-heavy areas around the White House remain open, trusting that events will remain peaceful. Local ice cream vendors Majed Hakem and Sammy, for example, plan to keep operating, convinced of the public’s general goodwill. Despite visible precautions like boarded windows, officials have emphasized that D.C. currently faces no credible threats, suggesting these efforts are more precautionary than reactionary.

Impact on the Community

The focus on robust White House security measures carries significant implications for D.C. residents and businesses. While the fencing and increased patrols may instill confidence in some, the “fortress” atmosphere might also discourage tourism and dampen the city’s business climate. Eric J. Jones of the Apartment and Office Building Association of Metropolitan Washington voiced the concerns of business owners, stating that unnecessary destruction could hinder the downtown core’s revitalization efforts. By adopting a proactive approach, D.C. leaders hope to balance the need for White House security with community resilience, ensuring both a smooth election process and public safety.
