Thank God For Texas: House Passes ‘Constitutional Carry’ Bill to Carry a Gun without a License
On Thursday, Texas’ House of Representatives gave its initial approval to a bill that allows the constitutional carry of handguns, either openly or concealed, without a permit.
The bill would remove the state requirements residents need to obtain a license so that they can carry a handgun. The state’s House approved the said bill with an 84-56 vote and will now move to Texas’ Senate.
If the said bill passes and gets signed into law, it will allow Texas residents aged 21 years and up to carry a handgun even without permit, as long as the residents are not disallowed by the state or by federal law to carry one.
As per the Texas Tribune, the Texas House passing the constitutional carry bill came following some of the most heated debates seen in the state's House floor.
Rep Matt Schaefer sponsored the bill, reportedly saying that people should call it “common-sense carry” prior to arguing that they should not prevent residents of the state from defending themselves and their families if they lack time and resources to obtain a license.
Additionally, Schaefer said that the bill would not remove the ban on carrying firearms in restricted places. Additionally, under it, business and property owners still have the right to deny people with handguns access to enter their area.
Texas House of Representatives Approve Constitutional Carry Bill Following Intense Debates
Democratic Speaker Pro Tempore Joe Moody, during the debate for the said bill, tried to push for an amendment that could have killed the legislation effectively, but he failed. In rejecting the said measure, Moody mentioned the El Paso Walmart shooting in 2019, saying no action has been made after that incident.
The prospects of the bill passing the state Senate remains unclear. The Senate typically is the more conservative body. However, similar proposals have failed to move on from there recently.
Lt. Gov. Dan Patric, who oversees Texas’ Senate, have expressed his hesitation over the proposal in 2017. He said that given all the political violence in the state, law enforcement is not keen on the idea of people having the ability to walk around with a gun knowing they could have a permit or not.

Good deal Texas, licensing is just a tax on hard working people that believe in the 2nd amendment.

Guess what, we all know the bad guys do carry guns, they carry hot too.
Record shows that the police cannot protect us all,, sadly, they can’t seem to protect themselves from the thugs, hoodlums and their political allies. When criminals become folks heroes, when cities and counties are paying what is tantamount to ransom to keep the hoodlums from rioting, looting, burning, and sometimes even murder that is when we all need to understand that liberals want to reverse the norm, now criminals, even one that put a loaded gun to a pregnant woman’s belly during a home invasion gets handed the keys to the city and his family rewarded with several millions by another city. Something is got to give!

I’m torn here. Because I have seen too many folks handling weapons at ranges that actually have no clue what they’re doing. Finger on trigger when inappropriate, paying little attention to muzzle direction, etc. I guess I would prefer something along the lines of constitutional carry, but with a provision you must first take a class on the safe handling of a handgun. Cost $5 per person. 30 minute class, ensuring ALL know the 3 essentials. 1)treat every weapon as it is loaded 2) NEVER have ur finger on trigger unless you’re ready to discharge 3) NEVER point ur weapon at anything you’re not ready/willing/able to destroy. Seen far too many fingers on triggers and just plain dangerous moves by rookies. Pound those 3 into their heads, repeatedly. Lather, rinse, repeat

Tending to agree with Brian. Bit torn on the subject in the manner of “ANYONE’ can carry. I believe wholeheartedly in the Constitution and our personal God given right to protect ourselves/family. However, you know as well as I do, at this day in age there is too many that should not have a gun in their vicinity until they receive some education and instruction. Does not Texas REQUIRE Hunter Education before you can get a hunting license??? Just think of this for a serious moment, there is a reason for this and can see where the same thought & consideration should be given to one wanting to carry.

I’m glad to see that, but Texas is late to the party. There are, I believe, 15 other states that have passed Constitutional Carry. The only reason I mention that is that Texas has always led the way. It seems they are losing some ground. I would have expected them to be one of the first. It scares me to see how restricted Constitutional freedoms have become.
Austin, Houston, Dallas, San Antonio… they are all purple if not blue. Texas is turning purple.

Who decides the above? You? Some Democrat in the legislature? ANY restriction, you are right back where you started.
