Joe Biden generated outrage over the weekend after telling a black radio host that he “ain’t black” if he’s undecided between himself and President Trump.

Charlamagne tha God is the host of popular radio show The Breakfast Club, a show with strong ties to hip hop that interviews politicians, entertainers and other public figures. He was interviewing Joe Biden via video chat, and asked Biden why black voters should feel excited about his candidacy.

He was visibly surprised when Biden responded, “I tell you, if you have a problem figuring out whether you’re for me or Trump, then you ain’t black.”

A shaken Charlamagne replied, “It has nothing to do with Trump. It has to do with the fact that I want something for my community”.

Biden interrupted the host to defend his record of support for the African American community, but his aides ended the interview shortly after the uncouth joke. As aides told him time was up, Biden said “Uh-oh, I’m in trouble.”

Commentators, liberal and conservative alike, were incensed by Biden’s remarks. One Twitter user called Biden telling a black man he wasn’t black if he didn’t vote a certain way “the epitome of white privilege.”

Biden Gaffes Pile Up

The comment angered many from the left and right, and brought up old resentments in the black community toward the American political establishment, particularly the Democratic Party. It adds to a growing feeling in America that Democrats feel entitled to the black vote. It also was not the first time he made a cavalier, rude remark to a black audience.

During his time as Obama’s vice president, Biden told a mostly black group of voters in Virginia that the Republicans were going to “put ya’ll back in chains”, illiciting boos from the crowd. During the 2020 campaign, the gaffes have been stacking up, leading many, including the president, to challenge the former VP’s competency for the nation’s highest public office.

Since the 2020 campaign began, many have come to question Joe Biden’s mental faculties, informed by lackluster debate performances, visible confusion while giving prepared remarks, and the inability to remember the famous line from the Declaration of Independence.

Trump: Biden Doesn’t Know He’s Alive

On Sunday, president Trump had no kind words to spare for his likely opponent in the general election. In an interview with reporter Sharyl Attkinson he said Biden was not mentally competent to be president.

Asked by Ms. Attkinson what Joe Biden’s strongest feature was as a political competitor, the president replied, “Well, I would have said experience, but he doesn't really have experience because I don't think he remembers what he did yesterday.”

Attkinson pressed, telling Trump to “pick one good thing.” The president declined to humor her request. He was, however, more than forthcoming in describing Biden’s weak points. He mentioned Russia and China as adversaries that Biden is incapable of contending with, and the corruption of the Democratic Party as factors that disqualify him from the presidency.

“Think of it. I'm against somebody that can’t answer simple questions.”
