Eleven days after his initial COVID-19 diagnosis, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been transferred to an intensive care unit. Monday’s night’s move is a chilling indication of the leader’s condition.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is struggling in his battle against COVID-19. The conservative leader received his diagnosis roughly twelve days ago. His condition, however, quickly worsened in recent days. On Monday, Johnson was transferred to an intensive care unit (ICU). He has deputized his Foreign Minister with carrying out his duties while he continues to fight the disease.

Keep Calm and Carry On

Under Johnson, the British government initially showed a laid-back response to the pandemic. He opted out of the intense measures its European neighbors are taking. Johnson’s team even floated the idea of relying on ‘herd immunity’, the idea that if enough people catch and recover from the virus, the whole population will gain a level of community-based immunity. This idea was thrown out following chilling projections from scientists if the UK did not aggressively prepare for the outbreak.

Though criticized heavily for its initial underreaction to the pandemic, the United Kingdom later changed tact, joining most of the world in aggressive social distancing, testing, and movement control measures. The country also, in about a week’s time, built its largest hospital, with a capacity of 3,500 patients and the equipment needed to treat serious COVID-19 cases.

The case count and number of fatalities continue to grow in the United Kingdom, and like what we see around the world, the surge of incoming patients is overwhelming medical infrastructure.

Johnson Leading From Home

All the while, Johnson has put on a brave face for his countrymen, assuring them that the United Kingdom will emerge from this trial stronger than ever. In this spirit, he continued to lead after his diagnosis with COVID-19 twelve days ago. The public scrutinized his ability to govern effectively while ill with the virus. His effort to maintain leadership continuity during a national emergency was commendable, however.

Recently, the PM’s battle with the disease took a terrible turn, making it impossible to continue leading his country’s government. On Sunday, he was hospitalized, with his team citing “persistent symptoms” as the reason. He praised the National Health Service and made assurances of his good spirits to the public.

Last night, however, he moved to the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU), an ominous sign of his condition. No longer a viable option to continue his duties, Johnson deputized his Foreign Minister, Dominic Raab.

Queen Makes a Rare Address

The virus is proving to be a major national trial. It is a unique moment for the country, following the immense challenge of negotiating its departure from the European Union. Johnson was a key figure in the United Kingdom’s departure, accelerating the process after previous PM Theresa May failed to reach a deal. The Queen of England, likely sensing the struggle after so many years of measuring the nation’s morale, made a rare televised address on Monday. Per the address:

“I am speaking to you at what I know is an increasingly challenging time. A time of disruption in the life of our country. A disruption that has brought grief to some, financial difficulties to many, and enormous changes to the daily lives of us all…
We will succeed. And that success will belong to every one of us. We should take comfort that while we may have more still to endure, better days will return. We will be with our friends again, we will be with our families again, we will meet again.”
