Cross-Platform Communication Becomes Possible for Facebook Messenger and Instagram
On Wednesday, Facebook has announced that it plans to enable cross-platform communication between Messenger and Instagram.
Messenger users will be able to contact an Instagram user without having to download a new app, and vice-versa.
The Guardian explained that Facebook Messenger and Instagram have merged more than 18 months after Mark Zuckerberg announced his intention to integrate the platforms.
The report added that this serves the first step towards a goal, which the company announced in March 2019. They aim “to merge not only those two platforms, but also to incorporate WhatsApp, and to enable end-to-end encryption for all messages sent between the three apps.”
“We’re connecting the Messenger and Instagram experience to bring some of the best Messenger features to Instagram,” said Facebook’s Adam Mosseri and Stan Chudnovsky, the heads of Instagram and Messenger, respectively. “People on Instagram can decide whether to update immediately to this new experience.”
According to them, they have researched that “four out of five people who use messaging apps in the US say that spending more time connecting with friends and family on these apps is important to them, yet one out of three people sometimes find it difficult to remember where to find a certain conversation thread.”
“With this update, it will be even easier to stay connected without thinking about which app to use to reach your friends and family,” they added.
According to Facebook, the new features will be rolled out in “a few countries” right away, and “globally soon.”
