1. What are my goals?
Do I want to:
- Lose weight?
- Build muscle?
- Eat healthier?
- All of these things?
- Lift weights?
- Participate in exercise classes?
- Do resistance training?
- All of these things?
- Get personal attention?
- Be left alone when I exercise?
- Get extra help because of physical limitations?
2. Can I try the place?
- How long is the trial?
- Do I have to pay?
- Are there limits to what I can try?
3. Is it convenient?
- Is it near home?
- Near work?
- Somewhere in between?
- How many locations does this gym have and can I work out in any of them (and if so, is there an additional cost)?
4. Does it have what I need?
- Cardio machines?
- Exercise machines?
- Free weights and kettle bells?
- Resistance bands or TRX?
- Mats and other group exercise equipment?
- Locker rooms?
- Child care (and does it cost extra)?
- All of these?
- Group aerobics classes?
- Yoga and pilates?

5. What is the quality of the staff?
- How friendly and tuned into your needs and interests is the staff?
- How welcoming are the group fitness instructors?
- Are trainers and group fitness instructors certified with the American Council on Exercise (ACE) or the Aerobics and Fitness
- Association of America (AFAA)?
- Do they have college degrees in fitness or exercise science?
6. What about the trainers?
- Are they friendly? Too obtrusive?
- In similar shape as I am?
- In my age group?
- Doing the sort of fitness training I’m interested in?
7. When is the gym open?
- Early morning? Evenings? Holidays and weekends?
- Are group exercise classes scheduled at times convenient for me?
- Is enough equipment available during times I plan to work out?
- Do you have to reserve a slot for a class or schedule time to speak with a trainer?
8. Is the gym cleaned and well maintained?
- Is any of the equipment broken?
- Do you see towels and sanitizer?
- Are members working out on the exercise machines and weight benches wiping them down?
- Do you see evidence of a cleaning staff?
- Are the floors and bathrooms clean?
9. What will it cost?
- Is there an initiation or signup fee?
- What’s included in the base price?
- Do I have to make a long-term commitment or can I pay month-to-month?
- Can I take the contract home and read it carefully before I sign it?
- If I opt out, can I get my money back?
10. Are there extra costs?
- Group classes?
- Personal training?
- Child care?
- Anything else?
11. Any benefits?
- Does the gym take Medicare or other health insurance benefits (and will I have to handle the paperwork)?
