NY Dems Seek Cuomo Impeachment After Resignation For Sexual Scandals-ss-Featured

After being plagued by a sexual harassment scandal, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo will soon vacate his office after tendering his resignation. Even though he's stepping down, Cuomo may still have to face impeachment, which can result in him being banned from running for governor again.

A months-long probe by the New York Assembly Judiciary Committee into the allegations against the governor will wrap up soon. With this, some Democrats are looking into continuing the process.

As per state Sen. Julia Salazar, a few hours after the governor announced his resignation, she supported an effort to pursue impeachment against the governor.

Will Pursuing Cuomo's Impeachment Be Worth It?

On Twitter, Salazar wrote that they have a responsibility to pursue a full impeachment process. She added that “anything less would fail to fully hold the governor accountable, and to prevent his behavior from being repeated in the future.”

Replying to another tweet calling for Cuomo’s impeachment, New York Assemblywoman Yuh-Line Niou simply responded with “We must.”

Additionally, state Sen. Alessandra Biaggi echoed the other calls for impeachment for a while now. On Wednesday, she also told The 19th, a non-profit news outlet, “I feel incredibly responsible to follow through on accountability, because if I don’t, and if we don’t, effectively what we are saying is that there are no rules or standards for sexual harassment in New York, and that is not acceptable.”

Even after an attorney general’s probe, the New York governor still denied any wrongdoing. It has been found that he did sexually harass women while he was on the top seat in New York’s local government.

Currently, it remains unknown whether the state’s assembly will pursue impeachment. However, his abrupt resignation created more questions about whether the process needs to continue.

On Wednesday, Democratic Assemblywoman Latrice Walker asked whether there’s value in seeking an impeachment.

“He’s already resigned, and what’s the goal here?” Walker asked about the issue. “If the goal here was to move this particular governor out of office, and now we’re in a position to move New York forward, let’s continue moving our state forward.”

However, after impeachment and conviction, the legislative branch could ban the governor from seeking office once again. Running for office is something Cuomo can still do following his resignation.

The assembly is the only body in the state with the power to impeach. It only needs a majority to let the impeachment move forward.

Following this, the NY governor would then need to be convicted via a two-thirds vote at the Impeachment Court, which includes each state senator except for the majority leader, as well as all seven judges from the state's Court of Appeals.
