The U.S. is now the nation with the third-highest number of coronavirus infections in the world – with the first two being Italy and China. The number of new coronaviruses cases in the country has surpassed 35,000 on Monday. The death toll in the U.S. has reached 471 – the sixth highest in the world.

According to U.S. health officials, coronavirus cases will rise as testing becomes more widely available. “All 50 states have reported confirmed cases of coronavirus. New York has the largest number of cases at nearly 17,000, after seeing a 37.4 percent spike Monday,” said Fox News.

States and cities have already issued measures to contain the virus, such as shuttering businesses and restaurants.

Former White House homeland security adviser Tom Bossert tweeted: “Sadly, the numbers now suggest the U.S. is poised to take the lead in #coronavirus cases. It’s reasonable to plan for the US to top the list of countries with the most cases in approximately 1 week.”

Italy, on the other hand, has had increasing numbers in cases and deaths. The number of infections is at 59,138, while the death toll is at 5,476.

In China, the contagion rate has started to slow down. The death toll stood at 3,274, with at least 81,454 confirmed cases.
