Singer-songwriter John Prine has died from coronavirus complications, as announced by his family. Prine was 73 years old. He died at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee.

Fox News reported that on March 29th, his family shared that he was critically ill. He had been placed on a ventilator while being treated for COVID-19-type symptoms.

A tweet from March 30th says that Prine was hospitalized on March 26th. “This is hard news for us to share,” read the post on Twitter. “But so many of you have loved and supported John over the years, we wanted to let you know, and give you the chance to send on more of that love and support now. And know that we love you, and that John loves you.”

A Fight Lost

According to his wife and manager Fiona Whelan Prine earlier in March, she had tested positive for the virus. She said she and her husband had to undergo quarantine and isolation from each other.

Fox News reported that Prine fought cancer twice – the most recent one being lung cancer in 2013.

The Los Angeles Times reported that earlier this year, Prine received the Recording Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Award at the 62nd Grammy Awards ceremony. He has 11 Grammy nominations under his belt and won twice over the years. He also joined the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2019.

In 2009, Bob Dylan shared positive remarks about Prine, saying: “Prine’s stuff is pure Proustian existentialism. Midwestern mind-trips to the Nth degree. And he writes beautiful songs. I remember when Kris Kristofferson first brought him on the scene.”

“All that stuff about ‘Sam Stone,’ the soldier-junkie-daddy and ‘Donald and Lydia,’ where people make love from 10 miles away. Nobody but Prine could write like that. If I had to pick one song of his, it might be ‘Lake Marie,’” Dylan added.
