Former Navy fighter pilot Mike Garcia won a special election to capture a vacant House seat for the Republican party.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Associated Press reported that Mr.Garcia had a 12-point lead with 81% of precincts reporting. His opponent, California Democrat Christy Smith, threw in the towel after Garcia took a commanding lead and congratulated her opponent. “[The] current tally shows Mike Garcia is the like victor,” said Smith.

The contested seat was vacated in October of last year when Democrat Katie Hill resigned. Ms. Hill stepped down after a series of leaked photos brought an abrupt end to her political career. After the photos surfaced, Hill admitted to engaging in inappropriate sexual relations with a congressional staffer and a campaign aide, and she resigned on November 3, 2019. California held a special election to fill Hill’s vacated seat.

After 20 Years

Republicans took back the vacated seat with Garcia’s win. The special election victory marked the first time that Republicans captured a California district from Democrats in more than 20 years. However, the win won’t last very long. Garcia will only hold the seat for the remainder of Hill’s term, so he will have to face Ms. Smith again in an election day rematch this November. Whoever wins will take office in January and serve a full two-year term.

Garcia said his win sends a clear message that Californians are getting tired of the state’s liberal government. “It is clear that our message of lower taxes and ensuring we don’t take liberal Sacramento dysfunction to Washington prevailed,” Garcia said in a post-victory statement.

The GOP win was backed by a strong turnout from voters and mail-in ballots. Polling data indicates that a higher percentage of Republicans showed up to vote, and they also sent in more mail-in ballots than Democrats. Voters cast 4,199 in-person votes in Los Angeles County, and Garcia captured for than two times as many as Smith. The data shows that California’s Republican voters are energized and that’s a good sign for the GOP. A strong turnout from Republican voters could have a major impact on the elections in November.

Wisconsin Defended

Meanwhile, the GOP also fended off a Democratic bid to capture a vacant House seat in Wisconsin. Wisconsin state senator Tom Tiffany beat Democrat Tricia Zunker in a special election for a seat vacated by GOP Rep. Sean Duffy. Duffy resigned last year when he learned that one of his children had health problems. Mr. Tiffany won 57% of the vote in the special election and Republicans maintained control of the contested seat.

According to reports, President Trump was following the elections closely. Sources indicated that Trump asked his aides for updates several times and he kept in close contact with House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) throughout the day. Trump’s joint fundraising program, the Trump Victory Committee, spent $2 million to support the GOP candidates in California and Wisconsin.

Republicans are very sensitive to the opinion of the voters right now, so the wins are a major relief for the GOP. Trump’s primary platform for reelection is the strength of the economy, but the pandemic has laid waste to much of the progress he has made over the past 3 years. However, it seems that a lot of voters in California and Wisconsin still have faith in the Republican party’s ability to counter the coronavirus recession, and that’s a good sign for Trump’s chances in November.

Mike Garcia only won by 12 points? Are the democrats demanding a recount? Perhaps they’re planning assassination as the quicker route to take back to the seat?
If I were Rep. Garcia, I would be remote starting my car, wearing body armor, and carrying a weapon or two.
