43 Dead after Hurricane Ida Flooding Brings Destruction to Northeast-ss-Featured

At least 43 people have reportedly died following historic rains connected to Hurricane Ida have caused floods in northeastern states from Wednesday night to Thursday morning.

At least 13 individuals have been confirmed to have died in New York City. Some of the casualties include a 2-year-old child, a 48-year-old woman, and a 50-year-old man – all three were found inside a home in Queens’ Jamaica neighborhood.

According to Westchester County Police, a 69-year-old man was also found dead close to Route 199 in Elmsford. He was found near to where his car had been submerged on a ramp at the entrance of the Saw Mill River Parkway.

In New Jersey, officials revealed that at least 23 individuals have died. Four of these were found dead inside an apartment complex in Elizabeth, according to the city mayor and spokesperson. The rest of the casualties were in vehicles that were overtaken by water when the flood came.

In Pennsylvania’s Montgomery County, four people have died. Meanwhile, Connecticut State Police and local authorities mentioned that an on-duty state trooper was in his cruiser when waters swept the vehicle away. The said trooper was rushed to a hospital. In Maryland, a 19-year-old male was also discovered dead.

Hurricane Ida Causes Havoc in Northeastern U.S.

On Thursday afternoon, President Joe Biden spoke to reporters and revealed that he had already spoken to Gov. Kathy Hochul of New York and Gov. Phil Murphy of New Jersey. He also said he plans to speak to Gov. Tom Wolf of Pennsylvania.

“We want to express my heartfelt thanks to all the first responders and everyone working through the night well into the morning to save lives and get power back,” Biden said.

“There’s a lot of damage. I made clear to the governors: My team at the Federal Emergency Management Agency, FEMA, is on the ground ready to provide all the assistance that’s needed,” the president added.

Biden also blamed climate change for the destructive storms many places in the U.S. are currently experiencing. He said, “we must be better prepared. We need to act.”
