Dems Use Reconciliation to Bypass Republican Support for New Immigration Reform-ss-Featured

On Friday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi stated that a sweeping, spending bill worth trillions of dollars that Democrats are trying to pass with no support from Republicans should tackle immigration reform as well. Democratic lawmakers are reportedly planning to use Reconciliation to bypass Republicans in passing a bill that would include a pathway for illegal immigrants to become citizens.

Pelosi told reporters that she believes the reconciliation should include immigration reform. “We know we have a very good case for this to be included,” Pelosi also said.

Democratic lawmakers continue to try and push a way to include a means for “Dreamers,” Temporary Protected Status holders, essential workers, and also farm workers to become citizens.

The immigration provisions they want to put forth will form part of a bill worth around $3.5 trillion. Currently, the Democrats are still negotiating the said bill. The details of the proposal remain unclear. However, many expect it to invest billions in a wide variety of “progressive” programs. Many also expect them to try using budget reconciliation to bypass the Republicans’ 60-vote filibuster in the Senate.

The proposal will use a budget funded by higher taxes imposed on wealthy Americans as well as corporations.

The comments Pelosi made on Friday come after a meeting attended by President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and Democratic legislators that took place this week. They reportedly discussed the next steps they would undertake regarding the immigration reform.
